Posted: Tuesday, April 8, 2014, 3:01 AM YOUNG ARTISTS often find themselves in a difficult transition after they finish school. Rife with creative energy and knowledge, they're also confronting real-world financial responsibilities. Talk about a creative buzzkill. The Leonore Annenberg Fellowship Fund for the Performing and Visual Arts alleviates some of those pressures. Named for the late philanthropist, the fellowship, now in its seventh year, partners with renowned arts organizations and institutions to award $50,000 a year for up to two years to exceptional young dancers, musicians, actors and visual artists as they segue into their professional lives as artists. Walter and Leonore Annenberg had links to the city and made significant contributions to it, but no Philly artists had been chosen - until this year, when two of the seven fellowship recipients have local ties: violinist and composer Francesca dePasquale, 24, and visual artist Mia Rosenthal, 36 (see box, right). "We felt that it was time that we tapped into Philadelphia's culture," said Gail Levin, program director of the Leonore Annenberg Scholarship, Fellowship and School Funds. If Francesca dePasquale's name rings a bell, it's because she hails from a distinguished family of musicians, five of whom are or were members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Her late father, William, was co-concertmaster of the orchestra. Her mother, Gloria, is a member of the cello section. Both also formed the dePasquale String Quartet with William's brothers (Gloria stepped in after the death of cellist Francis dePasquale). Francesca grew up in the Narberth area and attended Episcopal Academy until eighth grade. She was homeschooled after that to allow greater flexibility for her musical pursuits. "When I was 3 years old, I thought that everyone played an instrument because everyone in my life did," Francesca said. "I just thought that's what human beings did. So, my initial impression was that music is for everyone, and I wouldn't hesitate to say that that grew into my passion for trying to bring music to everyone now. Francesca's two-year award will allow her to focus on her own career as well as that other passion - educating others about music. "She grew up going out into the community with me and her father doing community-engagement events," Gloria dePasquale said. "She went into schools and underserved areas with us from a very early age and saw the power of music to connect with people in different circumstances, and she became enthralled with that. "In this day and age, musicians are finding that they need to develop those skills, but Francesca grew up thinking that was part of the palette and has been developing these skills since she was 4 years old. Francesca plans to use some of her fellowship to work with a psychologist on how kids of different ages learn. "There are huge differences in cognitive development between a child that is 4 years old and a child that is 6 years old, and I would love to know those differences so that I can tailor my presentations to have the biggest impact," she said. She'll also record her debut CD, with music that explores "the development of my artistic voice," plus a newly commissioned work from an American composer. Francesca attended the Colburn School Conservatory of Music, in Los Angeles, and expects to earn her master's degree this year from the Juilliard School, where she has spent her final year working as teaching assistant for Itzhak Perlman. She was nominated for the Annenberg Fellowship by the Perlman Music Program, the summer program for gifted young violinists founded by the renowned violinist's wife, Toby Perlman. "I think the foundation made a great choice," Toby Perlman said. "Francesca is something out of this world, an elegant, charming, lovely creature. Yes, she's a terrific fiddle player, but she's very special. She's lucky, but she made her own luck. I think that she'll maximize this opportunity. "I remember when the awards were created," Gloria dePasquale said, "and never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that my daughter would one day be the recipient. It's such a generous thing to select these outstanding future leaders in each one of the artistic disciplines and allow them the freedom to grow their creativity. THE VIBE: Comfortable and chic, this strip mall BYO brings jazzed up American food and top-notch pizza to Burlington County. STANDOUT DISHES: Don’t miss the sausage and broccoli rabe pizza ($14) and the oven-roasted branzino ($24).A true neighborhood restaurant is a thing of beauty. To succeed, it needs to be inclusive, personal, affordable and, naturally, serve food that always leaves you wanting more. After an initial misstep, the reimagined District Riverton Bistro in this sleepy Burlington County river town is that restaurant. Opened in late 2012 as District 611, a BYO serving Neapolitan-style pizza and Italian small plates, the eatery earned high marks for its pristine antipasti and puffy pizzas from chef Brian Baglin, a former G.M. at Pod, Stephen Starr’s Asian-fusion restaurant in Philadelphia’s University City. Its abrupt closing in less than a year left many residents scratching their heads — but managing partners Jim Brandenburger and Ken Merriman, both Riverton residents, said it was a simple matter of not being able to pay the bills. Mistakes that contributed to the closing, according to Brandenburger, included overstaffing, dropping lunch service soon after the restaurant opened and offering dishes that were too specialized and not family-friendly. While Baglin’s food was first-rate, it was also labor intensive and not necessarily approachable for all diners. Chef Dan Maher plates a dish in the bistro's kitchen. Avi Steinhardt Kudos to Brandenburger and Merriman for having the moxie to come back swinging after this initial (and no doubt expensive) stumble. With former Philly Le Bec-Fin chef Dan Maher in the kitchen, District Riverton Bistro reopened in September, and judging from the crowds during a recent visit, the formula is spot-on. Changes include adding a second wood-burning pizza oven to keep the pies flowing on busy weekend nights, offering a Sunday family-style dinner for $20 per person, a $6 kids menu and inviting kids from area sports teams to come in uniform for a free Saturday lunch. But don’t think for a minute that this CIA-trained chef — who worked with Merriman at Fado Irish Pub and Tir Na Nog, both in Philly — has cut corners or sacrificed flavors for the redo. Yes, you can get a bacon cheddar burger, with hand-cut fries, for $12 on the dinner menu and a traditional pepperoni pizza for $11. But Maher pulls out all the stops with the Little Italy ($13), which drapes sheets of prosciutto over a mound of arugula, figs and melted mozzarella cheese atop a crust with perfect snap. Avi Steinhardt We also adored the Italian sausage broccoli rabe pie ($14), with its toothsome marriage of roasted garlic, crumbled fennel-spiked sausage, creamy dollops of ricotta and a tangle of bitter greens, a combo up to the most sophisticated palate. You can get regular chicken wings ($10) spiced with chipotle chilies, but then you’d be missing the pig “wings” ($10), six tender morsels of pork riblets swabbed with a zippy sweet and spicy Thai chili sauce. The crab mac and cheese ($12) is another winner, pasta in a creamy white cheddar sauce upgraded with lumps of primo crab meat. The front of the house isn’t yet in lockstep with the kitchen. Our server was friendly but inattentive, forgetting the white anchovies on my lackluster Caesar salad ($8) — dinner’s only real slacker dish — and spending an inordinate amount of time chatting loudly with friends at the next table. Avi Steinhardt My crab cakes ($24) were one of the more expensive items on the menu, but well worth the price. The two large sauteed mounds of jumbo lump meat, sans filler, arrived topped with a gently charred corn salsa and spicy remoulade sauce. GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) – Plans for a new multi-million dollar sports complex will be heard Tuesday by Greenwood’s Redevelopment Commission. TOKYO (AP) — A U.S. jury ordered Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Police said a man found hurt at a Fort Wayne business died after what appears to be an attempted armed robbery. According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, a man attempted to rob Smoke House Tobacco Outlet, located at 2217 S. Lafayette Street, Monday around 9:30 a.m. A customer saw the victim lying down through a store window and called police. According to surveillance video footage, the suspect was wearing a two-toned grey and black jacket. He was also wearing a red ball cap with some type of emblem on it. Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect. The coroner will release the victim’s identity and cause of death once an autopsy is completed. WISH-TV’s sister station WANE-TV spoke with several people who knew the owner. “I don’t know why anybody would do anything like this because the guy helps everybody around the community; he’s a very good guy,” said Huma Lik, a customer of Smoke House Tobacco Outlet. [I] always keep my options open. It’s all about what’s best for myself. You obviously look at financial [benefits] but you then look at footy wise. I am playing some of my best and consistent football at this club. You have to take that into account. He has been linked with a return to Brisbane next year. ‘‘I’ve played my more consistent football here,’’ Te’o said. ‘‘At times I’ve played some really good footy at other clubs, here I’ve been able to be consistent. I spent four years at Brisbane. I honestly thought I’d be there forever. That was the plan. ‘‘I really enjoyed that city. This is my second year here so it’s starting to feel really good. Probably where I felt at home [most] would’ve been Brisbane. I did really enjoy it. I became very close to the guys, the city, and my family was there. ‘‘Football wise in the end it wasn’t working out and I had to go somewhere else. Madge [Maguire] has done a lot for me in terms of his expectations. He has put in a lot of work for me. I don’t want to write off some of the other coaches I’ve had before who have done a lot for me. The Orcas High School Strings played at the noon gathering of The Music Performance Group on March 25 at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church. They previewed three selections that they have been preparing for a regional music contest at Western Washington University. Directed by Pamela Wright, but playing without a conductor, the High School Strings performed Habanera from “Carmen” by Georges Bizet, Sospiri by Edward Elgar, and Scherzo from Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, “Eroica.” Members of the High School Strings include: Emilia Carter, Lisa Carter, Michael Chesher, Brigid Ehrmantraut, Michael Harlow, Anthony Kaskurs, Wylie Kau, Enzo Thixton, Emily Toombs, Zach Waage, and Paris Wilson. The Music Performance Group meets every two months from September through May at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 27, at noon. The Interactive Financial eXchange (IFX; http://www.ifxforum.org ) Forum, which took the lead role in a collaborative effort to develop a new international standard for standalone electronic remittance messages, today announced that the ISO 20022 Payment Standard Evaluation Group has approved this submission, and the messages will soon be published as part of the ISO 20022 standard. The IFX Forum, a submitting organization to ISO 20022, is an international non-profit industry association whose mission is to develop and promote the adoption of its open, interoperable standard for financial data exchange. Remittance information is exchanged between a buyer and a seller to "explain" a payment. ISO 20022 is an international standard for financial services messaging, with a repository containing descriptions of messages and business processes. "As an active member of the IFX Forum, NACHA collaborated with the other IFX members to help develop the ISO 20022 Standalone Remittance messages," said Jan Estep, NACHA President and CEO. "NACHA’s XML-ACH Remittance Information Opt-in (XML-ACH) program specifically supports the use of these messages in the ACH Network today. The inclusion of the ISO 20022 international remittance information standard is a great example of how the ACH Network continues to support innovation, especially in critical areas of business need where the Network can securely facilitate the rich exchange of payments plus information between trading partners." "It is very rewarding to see several hundred man-hours of collaboration bear full fruit in the adoption of the standalone remittance material by ISO 20022," said IFX President Richard P. Urban. "The new messages provide a standard approach for electronic remittance delivery, and their use will eliminate issues in reconciling electronic payments and further enable straight-through-processing of payments. Because these standalone messages can be used both within and outside of payment delivery channels, we believe adoption can advance quickly. Industry can begin to adopt these messages for BTB exchanges knowing that the financial institutions will be referencing the exact same standard." Through its Liaison and Interoperability Working Group, the IFX Forum spearheaded the effort to develop the ISO 20022 standalone remittance standard, based on its leadership in this area. The Forum previously led the ISTH initiative that resulted in the first ISO 20022 payment initiation messages ever built and it was the first organization to incorporate these in its own standard; Forum leaders are prominent in the Remittance Coalition set up by the U.S. Federal Reserve; and the Forum actively engages with other international standards organizations in the financial services sector. IFX Forum members NACHA – The Electronic Payments Association, Wells Fargo and Bank of America Merrill Lynch were key contributors to the effort. The Forum's members were joined in the submission by Open Applications Group (OAGi) . Background Electronic payments can improve speed, convenience, security, and cost-effectiveness, as well as delivering environmental benefits. However, though electronic payments by consumers have risen dramatically, the business sector has lagged behind, with checks still the preferred method for paying invoices. This is due to difficulties in exchanging accurate remittance data: a lack of cross-industry standards, different requirements in different industries, and a plethora of competing platforms and formats, etc. Having a single, international standalone remittance standard suitable for use by businesses of any size ameliorates these problems, and benefits all parties involved in the payments process. Creating and submitting the remittance material was an iterative process that took place over a number of months. A business justification was first developed; when that was accepted by ISO 20022, the actual messages were written. The message development process leveraged the existing credit and direct debit initiation models and message definition report published by ISO 20022. The final submission voted on and adopted by ISO 20022 included a Business Process Diagram (activity diagram), a Message Flow Diagram (sequence diagram), and examples of valid XML instances of each candidate message and other descriptive material, as well as the two new remittance messages themselves. The IFX Forum's membership includes organizations from 14 countries on five continents. In addition to developing IFX, the Forum actively engages in international standards activity, including longtime liaison efforts with ISO and contributions to ISO 20022, a leadership role in the Remittance Coalition set up by the U.S. Federal Reserve, and Memoranda of Understanding with ASC X9, BIAN and EPASOrg. MONTREAL - The party of Rene Levesque absorbed a devastating electoral blow Monday, a loss that knocked the Parti Quebecois's vote count back four decades to its days as a fledgling political outfit. The result could trigger an existential emergency for the PQ, as it faces the realization that its very raison d'etre — Quebec independence — has been deemed politically toxic. Pauline Marois announced her departure after Monday's defeat and very likely became the last PQ leader who will have served alongside Levesque, the party's founding father. Levesque's first generation of troops has failed in its mission to secede from Canada, but the next generation vowed Monday to fight on, with Marois's blessing. "There's a changing of the guard in the Parti Quebecois, a changing of the guard that represents the future," Marois told a chanting room of supporters in Montreal during a consolation speech in which she announced she would resign. "And like Mr. Levesque had the habit of saying: 'The future is long. In its first-ever election in 1970, the PQ won less than 24 per cent of the popular vote. On Monday, it captured 25 per cent. Looking to the future, the PQ ranks include several possible successors who could make a run for the leadership. Among the potential candidates are magnate-turned-politician Pierre Karl Peladeau as well as Marois cabinet ministers Bernard Drainville and Jean-Francois Lisee. Drainville told the enthusiastic crowd that he wasn't ready to give up on the sovereignty project. "We will never abandon it — never!" Drainville shouted into the microphone before leading the party faithful's traditional chant of 'We want a country, we want a country. But it's unclear what the future holds for the PQ. The resounding loss at the hands of the Liberals is likely to force the pro-independence party to do some soul searching as it faces the grim possibility that its dream of a sovereign Quebec is on hold for several years. The PQ has headed a Quebec government for only 18 months out of the last decade and has not earned at least 40 per cent of the popular vote since 1998, now a span of five general elections. It did, however, cling to Official Opposition status Monday after finishing ahead of the Coalition party. Marois, who lost her own seat of Charlevoix-Cote-de-Beaupre, came to power as Quebec's first woman premier in September 2012 after winning 54 seats and 32 per cent of the popular vote. "The defeat of our party tonight without a doubt saddens me as much as you, if not more than you," said Marois, who called the election last month when the PQ was atop the polls. Entering the campaign, opinion polls had suggested the minority PQ government was within striking distance of securing a majority mandate. But that support began to slide after Peladeau, Marois's superstar candidate, raised his fist in the air and vowed to make Quebec a country — an idea most Quebecers oppose. Marois followed up the Quebecor majority owner's dramatic proclamation by musing for days about how a sovereign Quebec would operate. Looking back, Peladeau's maiden political speech was perhaps too forceful, said PQ supporter Steve Beauchamp. "Maybe he came on a little too strong when he put his fist in the air — it might have been a bit much," Beauchamp said as he watched the results roll in at the Montreal rally. "Maybe he scared a lot of people. Beauchamp, 31, said the entrance of Peladeau, one of the most powerful media moguls in Canada, might have been the turning point in the PQ campaign. The party will have to decide how to proceed now that secession — its dream — has proven so hazardous to its political fortunes. "Yes, certainly we have our answer tonight," said Beauchamp, when asked if sovereignty had become toxic for the PQ. Peladeau, meanwhile, won his seat Monday in Saint-Jerome, north of Montreal. With his entry into the national assembly, he will likely become a contender to succeed Marois. Following his victory in Saint-Jerome, Peladeau was asked whether his pro-independence enthusiasm during that inaugural speech may have hurt the PQ. "Listen, I joined the Parti Quebecois, I joined a sovereigntist party — I am a sovereigntist," said Peladeau, who also laid what could be the groundwork for an eventual leadership run. "I will make every effort, all my energy to work for economic development. I really believe that in the 21st century Quebec is a nation. "It must increase its wealth, it must maintain this capacity that are our values and we do it with the solidarity that has accompanied it. PQ supporters who gathered at Marois's rally fell silent after media outlets began to project a convincing Liberal win, mere minutes after polls closed Monday night. Inside the Old Montreal hotel, small Quebec flags were handed out to the crowd. The mood, however, was sombre and few people bothered waving the fleur-de-lis at all. Some people consoled each other with hugs and pats on the back. A few in the crowd rubbed their red eyes. The audience booed loudly when a TV screen showed an image of Liberal Leader Philippe Couillard and announced he had defeated a PQ incumbent. However, the crowd came alive with chants when Peladeau, Lisee and Drainville took the stage. Lisee told the audience of several hundred people that at 90,000 members, the PQ has a bigger membership than all the other parties combined. "And this Parti Quebecois that Rene Levesque created, it survived the Bourassa years and it took power, it survived the Charest years and it took power, and it will survive the Couillard years and will take power," Lisee said, drawing booming applause. Security was particularly tight inside and outside the hotel, strengthened following the deadly election-night shooting during Marois's 2012 victory celebration. Police cruisers were parked in front of the building, as well as in a back alley. Bags were searched and attendees had to pass through an airport-style metal detector to gain access to the rally, which was on the 11th floor. On election night September 2012, gunshots rang out behind the Montreal club that held Marois's election-night rally, killing stagehand Denis Blanchette and wounding his colleague David Courage. Marois timed the snap election to try to take advantage of rookie leader Couillard's lack of experience and, more importantly, so she could capitalize on a boost in the popularity of the PQ, thanks to its secularism charter. Support for the party appeared to reach new heights on the back of the charter, a controversial-yet-popular project introduced last fall that would have banned public employees from wearing overt religious symbols in the workplace. Polls suggested the charter was popular with a majority of Quebecers, but surveys also found that most people in the province considered issues like immigrant integration to be far from a priority, well behind more pressing issues like health care, fighting corruption and job creation. The PQ campaign struggled to gain traction with the charter and continued to be haunted by its sovereignty talk. Following Peladeau's proclamation, Marois spent several days talking about how an independent Quebec would operate — complete with talk of open borders with Canada and the continued use of the loonie in Quebec. It was a surprising strategy, considering how polls have for years suggested that most Quebecers oppose secession from Canada. The PQ has long been forced to walk a fine line on the subject of independence, still a priority for hardcore supporters. For days, Marois's rivals attacked her on the referendum issue. Journalists peppered her with questions. The party tried to pivot, but to no avail. Indeed, the shift in strategy led to a telling, headline-grabbing moment when Marois gently — but firmly — pushed Peladeau away from a microphone as she tried to regain control of her campaign's message. In the final days of the campaign, Marois admitted she had regrets and said she wouldn't have answered questions about sovereignty if she could have gone back in time. On Monday, the 65-year-old political veteran, whom Levesque named as his minister of state for the status of women in 1981, stood on stage with the crowd chanting "Pauline, Pauline. "Quebecers have spoken and we must respect this result," Marois, her eyes glistening under her glasses, told supporters before leaving the podium. The PQ is unable to distinguish between religious zealotry that overtakes the public sphere and individuals who, though they exhibit their faith publicly, continue to work peacefully, alongside their neighbours of other beliefs, without difficulty. Make no mistake -- everyone in Quebec will be affected by the Charter of "Values." The entire society will be subjected to change as a result. Do we want people to be forced to choose their faith over integration in the public sphere? Do we want "Muslim only" sections of cities? That will be the result of failing to allow the integration of visible religious minorities in the public sphere. It is apartheid. Fifty years ago today, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have A Dream" speech. But today Dr. King's call to freedom and liberty might be considered inconsistent with "Quebec values." Quebec Premier Pauline Marois is an avowed separatist pursuing this agenda by unusual means: a series of xenophobic policies that is ostracizing Quebec from the 21st century mainstream. The civil rights struggle of our time is to insist that the only valid standard is the content of our own character, and not our religious clothing, celebration of particular holidays, or the language we speak at work and at home. The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) guidelines on subsidiarisation may have failed to excite foreign lenders in the country but the regulator's proposal to issue differentiated banking licence appear to have caught their imagination. Bankers claim that several mid-sized foreign lenders are keen to apply for a differentiated banking licence as and when RBI decides to offer such licences. "Out of the 43 foreign banks in India only four or five are engaged in full-fledged banking activities. The rest of them are only doing specialised banking business even though they have been given universal banking licence. It makes sense for them to opt for a differentiated banking licence and maintain focus on their core activity. We are certainly open to this idea," a banker with a mid-sized foreign bank said requesting anonymity. He declined to be identified as it is not immediately clear if RBI will allow foreign banks to opt for a differentiated banking licence without creating a subsidiary in India. RBI governor Raghuram Rajan, during a seminar last week, said that the central bank has opened up the possibility of creating differentiated banking licence that will allow banks to operate in niche areas. While Rajan made the comment in reference to the new banking licences offered to domestic players, the model appears to find favour with some of the foreign banks in the country. UBS, which has decided to surrender its banking licence in India, is one such bank. "India is still very important to us. If differentiated licensing comes in, and if we are able to do what we think we are good at, then we will certainly reconsider those options to re-engage in businesses in India," Aashish Kamat, managing director and chief executive of UBS in India, had told Business Standard in a recent interview. Industry sources say that Barclays could be another candidate for a differentiated banking licence. "Banks like Barclays will be inclined going for a differentiated banking licence," said a source. Barclays had exited its retail operations in India in December, 2011 - barely four-and-a-half years after starting it. A spokesperson of Barclays in India declined to offer comments. "I think there is lot of merit to differentiated banking licence model. All banks do not want to do every business. Different banks have different expertise and a differentiated licence will suit them (foreign banks)," Brijesh Mehra, managing director and head of international banking - India and South East Asia at Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), said. Industry analysts and bankers say that subsidiarisation could be a hurdle for foreign banks to opt for differentiated banking licence. While RBI wants foreign banks to set up wholly-owned subsidiaries (WOS) in India, it has not made it compulsory for the lenders to create WOS. "Not many foreign banks are interested in creating a subsidiary here. It is not clear at this point whether foreign banks have to set up subsidiaries first to be eligible for a differentiated licence," said a banker. He added that priority sector lending norms also need to be relaxed to encourage foreign banks opt for a differentiated banking licence. "The final guidelines on differentiated banking licence will probably offer some clarity," the banker said. In October, 2007 RBI had prepared a discussion paper on differentiated bank licensing, wherein it stated that the case for such licensing may be reviewed after a certain degree of success in financial inclusion is achieved and the central bank is satisfied with the quality and robustness of the risk management systems of the entire banking sector. The banking regulator, in a discussion paper on banking structure in India (released in August, 2013), said that banks have shown significant progress in financial inclusion and in improving the quality of risk management but added that a "lot more needs to be done". Call me crazy, but I thought they would have petered out long ago. Most of the other parents we know say their kids stopped having tantrums when they were 2 or 3. But my son is giving no indication that he's going to relent anytime soon. What should we do? How long do we have to wait for him to stop?A: Since you asked for it, I'll tell you: You're crazy. If you think you can just sit around and wait for your son to grow out of throwing tantrums, you're going to be very, very disappointed and frustrated. In fact, given how long this has lasted, there's a good chance that you and your spouse are the reason your son is still having tantrums in the first place. The only way to bring his reign of terror to an end is for you to step in and start doing something about it. Now.Your Friends Are RightAlmost all children have temper tantrums, but they usually end by age 3 - unless there's something going on that encourages the child to continue. Tantrums are actually a fairly normal developmental phase: they're the way children test the limits to see what they can and cannot get away with. But just because something is normal doesn't mean you should let it go. Making it very clear to young children that they can't have their way every time teaches them what the rules are and, more importantly, helps them learn to control themselvesTantrums won't blow over. And they won't go away on their own. At this point, getting your son to express his feelings without pitching a fit is going to be hard, but it can be done. And the only way that's going to happen is if you stop trying to be your child's friend and start being a parent. Unfortunately, that means you're going to have to be the bad guy. Your first mission is to work with your spouse to come up with firm boundaries and even firmer consequences if those rules get broken. It's essential that you're both on the same page here. Consider Other OptionsThe first few days and weeks of the new "we've-got-rules-around-here-mister" plan will be uncomfortable, but when your son realizes that you're serious, he'll most likely start changing. I say "most likely" because, even though tantrums can be the result of a lack of structure and rules in the home, there can be other causes. If, for example, your son's tantrums are violent and he's doing harm to himself or anyone else, you may be dealing less with a limit-testing issue and more with a mental health issue. Behavior that looks like tantrums can actually be caused by a number of conditions such as autism, Asperger's, ADHD, or OCD. If you feel you've tried everything to get your son's temper under control and are still coming up empty, seek out professional help.I get that when some parents hear the phrase "professional help," they immediately imagine that their child will be put on medication for life. Just so you know, those fears aren't necessarily well-founded. There are many, many options that don't involve medication at all, such as individual talk therapy, family counseling, and group behavior training. SALT LAKE CITY — It's a little after noon on a sunny day and the newspaper photographer wants one more image.He instructs Trey Burke to walk to his car in the parking lot of the Utah Jazz practice facility.With his father, Benji, close by in the lobby, Trey Burke starts to comply.But wait, a Free Press reporter who has been waiting patiently needs a few minutes of his time.Burke doesn't have much time since he is headed to shoot a commercial for a local car dealership, but it's just one more item on the to-do list.This all took place the day after a 20-point loss to the Pistons - a night when Burke was the last guy to leave the locker room because his expressive answers have won over the Jazz media.After that, he dutifully signed autographs for a line of fans waiting for a signature of the team's prized rookie.Then it's up the next morning for film work and a practice session.And now two newspapers are tugging at his free time.Such is the life of the point guard who the Jazz hopes becomes a franchise cornerstone, who at this time last year was leading Michigan to the national championship game.Burke, 21, is sheepish when discussing the attention. But when you are one of the top-three rookies and hear your name called last during pregame introductions (a Jazz tradition for point guards), it comes with the territory."I eventually want to be in that vein, but I don't want to say I am that guy right now, but I'm definitely working to be that type of franchise guy," Burke told the Free Press. "I noticed that in the beginning of the season that they called me last. It was kind of awkward at first, but now I'm kind of used to it. I'm sure none of the other guys really care about it. I think that definitely gives me confidence, makes me work harder to become that guy some day."DRAFT NIGHTLife can be funny. It was hard to find a mock draft predicting Burke would wind up with the Jazz last June.Burke, the consensus national player of the year, was considered the best point-guard prospect, and when considering the importance of that position, there was no way he would last until the Jazz picked 14th.The predraft buzz had the Orlando Magic taking the Wolverines sophomore with the second pick. Indiana's Victor Oladipo was going first to the Cleveland Cavaliers.There was a comfort level with Orlando. Former Pistons executive Scott Perry, a former Michigan assistant, is now the vice president/assistant general manager in Orlando and the Burkes were familiar with Perry.WORST-CASE SCENARIO?The New Orleans Pelicans, picking sixth, needed a point guard. There was word the Pistons might be interested so eighth was the floor.It all changed when the Cavs surprised everyone by picking UNLV forward Anthony Bennett first.The Magic quickly took Oladipo, and the Pelicans picked Kentucky center Nerlens Noel, who they traded to the 76ers for point guard Jrue Holiday.The Pistons were determined to make a playoff push and were in the market for a veteran point guard in free agency. They picked Georgia shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope - setting off a draft night uprising from Michigan fans hoping the Pistons would take the local product.The Jazz front office had a sense draft night would unfold in such a manner and worked the phones and found a natural partner in the Timberwolves, who were targeting Caldwell-Pope at No. 9.When the Timberwolves - who have point guard Ricky Rubio - picked Burke, there was a sense something was up. The Jazz got its point guard by trading the 14th and 21st picks of the draft to the Timberwolves."If Detroit hadn't of taken KCP, I don't know if we would have been able to get Trey," Jazz vice president of player personnel Walt Perrin said.There is status in draft position. And Utah doesn't exactly have the reputation of South Beach nor Broadway when it comes to destinations for 20-somethings.But there wasn't much disappointment.The wants of 20-somethings are different from fathers. Burke's father said the situation is ideal considering the reputation of the Miller family, who has owned the Jazz franchise for nearly 30 years."For one, it's more of a family city, it's not as fast-paced," Benji Burke said. "The Miller family has run this organization the same way for years. I think that's why they've been successful in the past because they have the right type of guys here. They want high-character guys here. They don't want guys to come here and just be kind of partyers, they want them to be professional and about their business."EARLY SUCCESSThere was quick adversity when a broken right index finger suffered in an exhibition game forced Burke to miss the first 12 games of the regular season.The Jazz is rebuilding, so some lumps were expected - but it was the last team to win this season and started 1-14.Burke was tossed right into the starting lineup.A 22-point defeat at Oklahoma City where he managed only four points was an early low point. But a victory over Chicago followed the next night, and the Jazz started playing better.He quickly zoomed up the rookie charts behind the 76ers' Michael Carter-Williams and Oladipo.There was a 21-point, six-assist night in a win over the Rockets. There was a 30-point, eight-assist, seven-rebound night in a victory at Orlando.Then he gave Michigan fans temporary validation when he went for 20 points and 12 assists in a 21-point thumping of the Pistons at the Palace.The top highlight might be his winning shot against the Magic on March 22 - roughly one year after his 30-footer against Kansas propelled Michigan into overtime and on to the Elite Eight."I don't know why, but at the end of games, for some reason, I just get more confident," Burke told reporters two days later. "I just think it's natural. I think it's something I've embraced from a young age."Failing so many times, playing this game my whole life, losing so many close games, losing in the national championship. I've already experienced failures. It's kind of like if I do miss a shot, you got to move on, you got to find a way to find the courage to take that shot again. I think that's something I really embrace."GOOD TEAMMATEBurke - who is averaging 12.4 points and 5.3 assists - has quickly become a favorite among his NBA teammates.Veterans Marvin Williams and John Lucas III have taken on mentor roles with the collection of young players, and Burke has become a sponge for their advice.Burke lives next door to Williams, who says things can get pretty loud when Burke is going against his friends at video games. He has threatened to call the authorities - he jokes.But Burke is all business on the floor, and Williams enjoys playing with him."He got the ability to create his own shot, and he's really good at creating for others," Williams said. "To see such a young point guard have that ability is really exciting to kind of play with him because a lot of time point guards don't develop both of those things until later in their careers."THAT 'DAWG'But Burke isn't a finished product. He is one of the worst shooters among starting point guards in the league, although the Jazz expects that to improve.He started to slump after the big night against the Pistons as the grind of the regular season started to wear him down."His body hurts in places he didn't know there were muscles before, and that's part of being a young guy in this league," coach Ty Corbin said. "I remember my first 82-game season, it's a long haul, and until you go through it and people talk to you about it and you say, 'I'm ready, I'm ready.' And then you go through it and it's like, 'Wow.' "The All-Star break offered a nice breather, and the Jazz wants Burke to take a break from the game when the season concludes."We didn't have to tell him, he hit the wall," Lucas said. "I was telling him everybody does it and you're not the only one. It's what you put in your body. You can't eat Wendy's anymore; you can't eat at McDonald's anymore because now you're playing at a different level."It's 82 games, you're flying, you got to eat healthy."Burke is also walking that tightrope common to young point guards with the ability to score - when to get buckets and when to defer.The Jazz has scoring options in Gordon Hayward, Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors, but the group is learning to play together.The night of Burke's winning shot against the Magic, it worked well as Hayward found Burke open in the corner. In the March 24 loss to the Pistons, Burke missed open jumpers early and the whole team struggled.All interested parties say Burke needs to add strength and bulk to his 6-foot frame. He is not blindingly quick so he has to learn to set up defenders.But Lucas is a believer that Burke will get it.Simply put, Burke has that "dawg" personality that Lucas sees in Russell Westbrook and Derrick Rose, Lucas' teammate for two seasons with the Bulls.They are different types of point guards, but mentally, Lucas can see the comparison to Rose.Lucas recalled the time when fervor swept the league while Jeremy Lin was playing for the Knicks in 2012. Players called talk calling him the best point guard in the Eastern Conference after only a couple of weeks foolish.So Rose was jealous when Deron Williams dropped 38 points on Lin.An angry expression came over Lucas' face as he tried to re-create Rose's reaction."He was on the plane like, 'Luke, awww! I wanted to be the one to dethrone him!' "Lucas said Rose picked up Lin full-court the next time they saw the Knicks "and you never seen Derrick pick nobody up full-court before on the first jump ball. That's the intensity (Burke) has."The what-if gameReading all of this probably will anger Pistons fans even more - considering not a week goes by without someone calling the drafting of Caldwell-Pope a mistake.Both players have downplayed any rivalry, and Caldwell-Pope even called Burke a friend recently.But Burke and his father admitted it crosses their mind: What would have happened if the Pistons had picked Burke?Benji Burke thinks it's a good thing Burke is with the Jazz. Playing so close to Ann Arbor influences might not have been the best thing for his son."I think he's right where he belongs," he said. "Going to Detroit, I just think there would have been too many distractions for him, being a young guy, on his own, being a rookie. I just think he needed to be away a little bit so he could grow and develop and mature off the court, and I think this is the perfect city to start and end your career."Trey Burke says people ask him about the Pistons and the draft all the time, so he can't put it completely behind him.But ultimately he is in Salt Lake City and Caldwell-Pope is in Detroit. There is no use in wasting brain cells thinking about what-ifs."You think about it sometimes, but not really because it didn't happen, so it's kind of like these wild imaginations in your mind," Burke said. "The media, they blow that up so much about if I would have been there or if he would have been somewhere else. Some people get the perception that we're not friends off the court, but we have a good relationship."That's just a 'what-if' really. Horry County school board warms to new building planBack in the mid-1800s, tensions were mounting between the U.S. and Mexico. Contemporaneously, many Roman Catholic, Irish immigrants to the U.S. were experiencing discrimination in their mostly Protestant adopted home.With hostilities breaking out between us and our neighbor to the south, a number of these Irish immigrants, sympathizing with Mexico as another poor, Catholic nation put upon by Protestant overlords, left the U.S. and formed an artillery battalion within the Mexican army.With St. Patrick's Day still on our minds, and in commemoration of "Los San Patricios," as they were known, we're making fresh corn tortillas.WHY YOU NEED TO LEARN THISMy lovely wife, who shuns packaged corn tortillas, said, "You should tell the people that even if they think they don't like corn tortillas, they'll love these." Consider yourselves told.THE STEPS YOU TAKECorn has been cultivated in the Americas for thousands of years and remains a major dietary component for much of the population. One thing about corn, though: If you eat it fresh, you can't access one of its vitamins: niacin (vitamin B3). A niacin deficiency can lead to a nasty little ailment called pellagra, whose symptoms include skin lesions, stomach problems and dementia.Seriously, in a food column? Yikes.Anyway, pre-Columbian peeps began soaking corn (or maize) in an alkaline solution (water mixed with ash). This soaking, called "nixtamalization," frees up the corn's niacin, making it available to us human consumers, lessening our risk of pellagra.Nixtamalization also dissolves the glue holding the husk of the kernel to the meat, called the endosperm. With the husks easily rubbed off and separated, the endosperm can be ground into a dough called "masa." Balls of masa were, and still are, flattened and cooked on a griddle, becoming the ancient flatbread known as tortillas.(If the soaked kernels are cooked instead of ground into masa, they're called hominy, large, white starchy kernels used in soups and stews, the best known of which is the Mexican pozole, a rich, red spicy broth garnished with hominy and bits of pork.)Now, as you've probably gathered, fresh masa is time-consuming and difficult to make, so we'll take a shortcut via the packaged, dried variety called masa harina. Masa harina resembles finely ground corn meal, but it isn't corn meal and don't try substituting it. Corn meal doesn't form dough like masa, so you won't be able to shape tortillas. Happily, you can find masa harina in Mexican groceries or supermarkets where there's a sizable Mexican-American population.With masa harina, cranking out fresh tortillas is pretty much easy peasy lemon squeezy. You don't even need a tortilla press, though they're relatively inexpensive and easy to find (again, anywhere with a sizable Mexican population).If you own a tortilla press, you probably don't need this tutorial. For the pressless masses, though, soldiering through this screed: Anything flat and heavy will suffice, like a plate or a pie pan or a manhole cover or a small, alien spacecraft. I like glass pie or cake pans because you can watch your masa transmogrify from dough ball to tortilla. Let's begin:1. Put a heavy pan or griddle over a medium to medium-high flame. While it's heating, make the dough. Figure one tortilla for each ounce of masa harina. For eight tortillas, we'll combine 1 cup of masa harina with 2/3 cup warm water and a quarter teaspoon of salt. Stir it with a spoon until the water is fully incorporated, a minute or two. Use your hands to form a dough ball. The ball should not be sticky nor should it be crumbly. Think Goldilocks. (You may need 2 to 4 tablespoons more water.) Divide the ball into eight equal pieces and cover them loosely with plastic wrap.2. Coat two sheets of plastic wrap with nonstick spray. Place a masa ball in the center of one sheet and cover it with the other sheet, sprayed side down.3. Center your flattening implement on top of the dough and press down to flatten it like a vanquished foe into a 6- or 7-inch circle, about 1/8-inch thick. Pressing the implement in a circular motion around the tortilla's circumference will give a bit more spread.4. Peel off the top sheet and flip the tortilla over onto your dominant hand. Peel off the bottom sheet and lay the tortilla on the hot pan and cook for 30 to 60 seconds, until the edges look dry. While it's cooking, press another tortilla. Flip the first with a spatula and cook until done: 15 seconds? A minute? You've eaten tortillas. You know what they look like. Remove and cover with a clean towel to keep warm.5. Make all eight tortillas, cooking and stacking as you go. You can wrap them and refrigerate for several days or use immediately. To use, rewarm on the griddle or place directly onto the burner over the flame for several seconds per side, just enough to warm them, not enough to set them on fire.
