South Sydney have identified Cronulla’s Wade Graham as a recruitment target as they seek to top up a pack that will lose the considerable punch of Sam Burgess and possibly State of Origin enforcer Ben Te’o next year. The Rabbitohs have been quietly working away on plans to replace Burgess since it was announced in February he would be switching to English rugby after this season, and the England international’s importance to them was rammed home with a barnstorming individual performance in their win over St George Illawarra last Saturday. It’s understood that Graham is one of several players Souths have expressed an interest in luring to Redfern and the off-contract back-rower is in the midst of making a decision on where his future lies. The ex-Panther has already played 113 NRL games at the age of only 23 and is earmarked in the Shire as a future captain of Cronulla, hence the Sharks’ own desire to keep him. Cronulla offered Graham a three-year contract extension last month at a time when they were also still in negotiations with Kangaroos forward Andrew Fifita and emerging hooker Michael Lichaa. Both those players would sign for Canterbury, only for Fifita’s $3.4million deal with the Bulldogs to come spectacularly unstuck. That development leaves the Sharks once again in talks to retain Fifita but Graham, who has now received an upgraded offer, remains a high priority in the face of rival interest led by Souths. While Michael Maguire’s team is exploring avenues to fill the hole that will be left by Burgess, the competition heavyweights could also possibly be without Queensland Origin rep Te’o, who could walk away from the final year of his deal. Te’o originally signed a three-year contract at the club, which he switched to after leaving Brisbane at the end the 2012 season. But the back-rower is technically off-contract this season, with an option in his favour to commit to the club for next season. Te’o confirmed a possible switch. ‘‘The option hasn’t been taken yet,’’ he said. ‘‘I do enjoy the club and I love the boys. It’s obviously something for me to think about. [I] always keep my options open. It’s all about what’s best for myself. You obviously look at financial [benefits] but you then look at footy wise. I am playing some of my best and consistent football at this club. You have to take that into account. Te’o is a product of renowned rugby league school Keebra Park High and returned to Queensland for four seasons at Brisbane after making his debut at Wests Tigers in 2007. He has been linked with a return to Brisbane next year. ‘‘I’ve played my more consistent football here,’’ Te’o said. ‘‘At times I’ve played some really good footy at other clubs, here I’ve been able to be consistent. I spent four years at Brisbane. I honestly thought I’d be there forever. That was the plan. ‘‘I really enjoyed that city. This is my second year here so it’s starting to feel really good. Probably where I felt at home [most] would’ve been Brisbane. I did really enjoy it. I became very close to the guys, the city, and my family was there. ‘‘Football wise in the end it wasn’t working out and I had to go somewhere else. Madge [Maguire] has done a lot for me in terms of his expectations. He has put in a lot of work for me. I don’t want to write off some of the other coaches I’ve had before who have done a lot for me. It might be a tough decision. It always is. Te’o experienced some of Maguire’s tough love in recent weeks. He was demoted to the bench before being recalled to the starting side in South Sydney’s 26-6 win against the Dragons. ‘‘He can be hard sometimes. I needed it,’’ Te’o said. ‘‘I went back and defended well on the weekend. I don’t mind shake-ups like that. Poll formPlease select an answer.
