THE VIBE: Comfortable and chic, this strip mall BYO brings jazzed up American food and top-notch pizza to Burlington County. STANDOUT DISHES: Don’t miss the sausage and broccoli rabe pizza ($14) and the oven-roasted branzino ($24).A true neighborhood restaurant is a thing of beauty. To succeed, it needs to be inclusive, personal, affordable and, naturally, serve food that always leaves you wanting more. After an initial misstep, the reimagined District Riverton Bistro in this sleepy Burlington County river town is that restaurant. Opened in late 2012 as District 611, a BYO serving Neapolitan-style pizza and Italian small plates, the eatery earned high marks for its pristine antipasti and puffy pizzas from chef Brian Baglin, a former G.M. at Pod, Stephen Starr’s Asian-fusion restaurant in Philadelphia’s University City. Its abrupt closing in less than a year left many residents scratching their heads — but managing partners Jim Brandenburger and Ken Merriman, both Riverton residents, said it was a simple matter of not being able to pay the bills. Mistakes that contributed to the closing, according to Brandenburger, included overstaffing, dropping lunch service soon after the restaurant opened and offering dishes that were too specialized and not family-friendly. While Baglin’s food was first-rate, it was also labor intensive and not necessarily approachable for all diners. Chef Dan Maher plates a dish in the bistro's kitchen. Avi Steinhardt Kudos to Brandenburger and Merriman for having the moxie to come back swinging after this initial (and no doubt expensive) stumble. With former Philly Le Bec-Fin chef Dan Maher in the kitchen, District Riverton Bistro reopened in September, and judging from the crowds during a recent visit, the formula is spot-on. Changes include adding a second wood-burning pizza oven to keep the pies flowing on busy weekend nights, offering a Sunday family-style dinner for $20 per person, a $6 kids menu and inviting kids from area sports teams to come in uniform for a free Saturday lunch. But don’t think for a minute that this CIA-trained chef — who worked with Merriman at Fado Irish Pub and Tir Na Nog, both in Philly — has cut corners or sacrificed flavors for the redo. Yes, you can get a bacon cheddar burger, with hand-cut fries, for $12 on the dinner menu and a traditional pepperoni pizza for $11. But Maher pulls out all the stops with the Little Italy ($13), which drapes sheets of prosciutto over a mound of arugula, figs and melted mozzarella cheese atop a crust with perfect snap. Avi Steinhardt We also adored the Italian sausage broccoli rabe pie ($14), with its toothsome marriage of roasted garlic, crumbled fennel-spiked sausage, creamy dollops of ricotta and a tangle of bitter greens, a combo up to the most sophisticated palate. You can get regular chicken wings ($10) spiced with chipotle chilies, but then you’d be missing the pig “wings” ($10), six tender morsels of pork riblets swabbed with a zippy sweet and spicy Thai chili sauce. The crab mac and cheese ($12) is another winner, pasta in a creamy white cheddar sauce upgraded with lumps of primo crab meat. The front of the house isn’t yet in lockstep with the kitchen. Our server was friendly but inattentive, forgetting the white anchovies on my lackluster Caesar salad ($8) — dinner’s only real slacker dish — and spending an inordinate amount of time chatting loudly with friends at the next table. Avi Steinhardt My crab cakes ($24) were one of the more expensive items on the menu, but well worth the price. The two large sauteed mounds of jumbo lump meat, sans filler, arrived topped with a gently charred corn salsa and spicy remoulade sauce. Proclaimed the best branzino ($24) my pal had eaten in recent memory, the sea bass was proof that Maher makes superb use of the imported Italian Forno Bravo oven that burns oak and birch at 900 degrees. The meaty fish was charged with a smoky goodness and adorned with a lemon beurre blanc freckled with bits of pancetta. Avi Steinhardt The Cozy Comfort section of the menu includes nostalgic dishes that speak to diners seeking traditional fare. Despite prices competitive with most local diners, the preparation and flavors in the likes of chicken pot pie ($15) and country meatloaf and mashed potatoes ($16) are off the charts. That’s shiitake mushrooms in the veal, pork and beef meatloaf, with its side of roasted baby carrots. The light and flaky pastry covering the fresh chicken in a white wine and Dijon gravy, with vegetables, just doesn’t get any better. The reimagined District Riverton Bistro opened in September. Avi Steinhardt For dessert, we had a chocolate “cookie” ($7), more of a muffin, really, filled with a decadent ganache center, served with a side of vanilla ice cream. Apple cobbler ($7), spied at the next table, looked and smelled equally delish. Do-overs are never easy. But it’s clear that the management and culinary team at this restructured eatery put a lot of thought and attention to detail into the reimagined bistro.
